The Guenthers were an athletic family. At the 1902 Turnverein Germanic Society picnic in Los Angeles, Hugo won first place in the shot put, high jump, and broad jump events. His sister, Annie, won first place in the egg race. Their brother, Rudy, was a gymnast and golfer. Rudy’s daughter, Murrieta, performed synchronized swimming routines for guests. Gymnastic rings were installed in the Indoor Plunge pool for the Guenthers to use and guests to enjoy during their stay. Tennis was also a popular activity among the resort guests!
