In 1974, Rod Laver, the only man to win the Grand Slam of tennis twice at that time, and his fellow Australian Roy Emerson, teamed up to develop a “tennis holiday” at Murrieta Hot Springs. Tennis players from all over the world came for either a week or a half-week of intense tennis instruction, including strategy and etiquette. Besides practicing on the court, the clinic also instructed by video.
Not only was tennis popular in Murrieta, thousands of people flocked to the ground-breaking ceremonies for the new Robert Trent Jones 18-hole golf course and clubhouse in April 1971. A news article stated, “A caravan of Hollywood movie, TV, and radio personalities and press correspondents were enthusiastic.” The estimated cost for the new facility was $2.5 million. When the Teamsters Union built the golf course for the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort, they called on one of the world’s most famous architects, Robert Trent Jones Sr., then in the twilight of his renowned career. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) course is still operating at 39500 Robert Trent Jones Parkway, Murrieta, and is now surrounded by homes.
